The old Dalmatian royal town of \u0160ibenik, northeast of Split, looks out over an eventful History over the centuries<\/a><\/strong> back. It lies on the coast \"Sveti Ante Canal\"<\/a><\/strong>that connects \u0160ibenik to the open sea. The four large fortifications from different eras have defended the city over the centuries, which is one reason for the relatively good preservation of the old town. The oldest fortress \u201cSv. Mihovil \u201dfrom the 11th century sits directly above the old town near the \u0160ibenik Bay and today houses u. a. an open air theater for performances and concerts. Behind, further up in the city on the mountain are two other fortresses. The fortress \u201cSv. Ivan \u201dnortheast and the fortress\u201c Barone \u201dslightly southwest. The fortress \u201cSv. Nikola \"<\/a><\/strong> from the 16th century lies at the entrance of the canal \u201cSv. Ante \u201dand controlled shipping traffic off the \u0160ibenik Bay. The wonderful tour along the canal is worthwhile here, as there is a lot to discover here.
